Land and Politics I
1648-1659

The changing fortunes of war might often give rise to changing fortunes for those who backed the wrong side! During Cromwell's rule, The Committee for Compounding set about redistributing wealth from those who had supported the wrong side to those who had backed the winner. Many of these awards would, needless to say, be reversed in 1660 when Charles II got his throne back. Note that the value of Major Babington's land seems suspiciously high.

18th November 1648
Re Thomas Jermyn
He begs delay for composition of lands in Somersham Hunts, they being still in possession of the inhabitants, the former tenants.

29th October 1659
County Commissioners for Huntingdonshire to the Commission for Sequestrations:
We can hear of none here liable for sequestration except Major Babington who has fen lands in Somersham worth £100 a year.
