Here follows some other cases that came before the bench involving reside Somersham including item 1 which hints strongly at the fact that Somersham had a gaol, quite early in the life of the Bishop's Palace.

Item1
Nicholas the son of Hugh the Clerk fell from a certain boat in Gravelode and was submerged (drowned). Then four nearby neighbours came upon him but they are not suspected. Therefore he rests in peace. And it was learned from the Crown Rolls that Andreas Berebagge and Eustace son of Benedict were imprisoned for the death aforesaid by the Bailiff of the Lord King. And William Code, Bailiff of the Bishop of Ely took the said Andreas and Eustace and led them to Somersham and from thence to Ely in the County of Cambridge. Therefore thence they shall speak.

Item 2
William Godfrey of Somersham killed Margaret the daughter of Andree Scharp with a knife in the town of Somersham and immediately afterwards he fled and is suspected. Therefore he is driven out and outlawed. The town of Somersham is responsible (for retreiving) chattels of his to the value of 20 shillings. And he was in the tenth of Richard the Reeve of Somersham through whom he has no good standing. Therefore with compassion. And Margaret the wife of William Godfrey who was the strength and help of the aforesaid William in carrying out the aforesaid crime has fled and is suspected of the death. Threfore she is driven out and made a waif. None may have her chattels. And jurors bear witness that Adam the son of Hugh Cay of Somersham similarly fled and he is suspected of the death. Therefore he is driven out and outlawed. The same town is responsible (for collecting) chattels of his of the value of 6 pence. And he was from the tithe of Simon of Somersham through whom he has no good standing. Therefore in compassion.

Afterwards the aforesaid Alan, son of Hugh, came (back) and asked in the same way that he wished to be aquitted of the aforesaid death, which said death he defended himself of. And he submitted himself for better or worse to the judgement of his compatriots. And the jurors declared, based on his sworn oath, that he was not guilty. Therefore he may go in peace.
