Somersham Fair
1426

Having a charter from the King was all well and good, but sometimes it was useful for the King to confirm the rights that had been granted by a previous monarch. Henry VI was asked to confirm the right to a market and a fair for Somersham and for good measure - parliament approved it too.

Patent Rolls Henry VI 1426

Inspeximus and confirmation by advice and assent of the lords spiritual and temporal in the parliament held at Westminster in the King’s first year, to the Bishop of Ely of a charter dated 23rd October 13 Edward II. Being a grant to John de Hothum, then Bishop, and his successors of Somersham county Huntingdon and Brandon Ferye county Suffolk also of an annual fair lasting four days at each place, beginning at Somersham on the vigil of Midsummer day and at Brandon Ferye on the vigil of SS Peter and Paul.
