At the manor court
1874

If the old basis for the manor sustained by a mass of peasants had been swept away by the enclosures in the 18th and 19th centuries, the language still remained as this notice clearly shows. Just change the word "tenant" for "peasant" and you could be in the 15th century! The format is still a Court although one could hardly see the Bishop of Ely holding court in the Rose and Crown.
