To the Sea in the Rain
1875

If it took a great deal of time to actually build the railways linking Somersham to the outside world, once they were up and running they were well used. The clipping below shows that the weather even in mid summer was still able to give us its worst.

July 24 1875
Somersham
Owing to the continuous heavy rain there is a large quantity of water out in the meadows. The rain also caused several land slips in Somersham Cutting which kept the up-line more or less blocked the whole of Wednesday. The Hunstanton excursion train was delayed here some time on its return. The line was not thoroughly cleared until early on Thursday morning, when trains were still running irregularly.
