The fine was a document that settled a dispute over land ownership and was a record of the agreed title over the land. Usually it was written in triplicate, one for each party and one retained as a central record of the court in which the action was decided. The information is spartan but the names and the types of land give us a clue as to how the community was developing and how new landholdings were being built up.
