Church Bells The following extract relating to Somersham is taken from : The Church Bells of Huntingdonshire their inscriptions, founders, uses, traditions, etc. by the Revd. John Wilson curate 38 inch - Revd. John Wilson curate 41 ½ inch – Jesus to the church the living call and to this house do summon all Notes Several of the heavier bells have ornamented canons. There is a monumental inscription to Revd John Wilson (ob. 1821) in the chancel. The registers record his marriage, his burial and late that of his widow and his son. Also of Martin Rawlings gent. July 14, 1816 aged 85 years. The above curate and wardens attest the register 1782. At the death knell, rung an hour after death date but not after sunset, 3 x 3 were given for a man, 3 x 2 for a woman and 3 x 1 for a little boy. The Pancake Bell (3rd) is usually rung on Shrove Tuesday and second in vestry meetings. On Sunday at 7 am the treble is wrung. At 9 am first second and third are chimed for the Holy Communion. For divine service at 11 am and 6.30 pm the 5th and 6th are raised and rung in alternate strokes after the other four which are chimed; after church the treble is rung for 5 minutes. At the afternoon service first second and third are chimed and treble rings in. Peals on New Years Eve, Christmas Day at 6 am and for service on Christmas and Easter days. Weddings if paid for!
