Protestation Return for Somersham
As parliament started to show its power, but before the kingdom slid into Civil war, a bill was passed through the House of Commons requiring all Englishmen (not women note) to sign a protestation. This was a form of oath by which they undertook to defend the kingdom, the crown and "the true reformed protestant religion". Any who refused would be held to be recusants (Catholics) and as such would be considered unfit to hold office. The Huntingdonshire returns survived a fire in the House of Commons and provide a valuable link in the evolution of village families from the tax returns of the Plantagenets to the start of the census in the 19th century.
