Italy
The Longobards, a tribe from Asia who had moved into Italy via Hungary occupy most of Northern and central Italy. The pope emerges as a secular ruler around Rome as well as prelate in chief of the church.
North Africa and Spain
Islamic, Moorish kingdoms occupy much of the mediterranean coast line. Spain, excepting the extreme North West corner, is completely under Moorish control and the city of Cordoba is probably the biggest in the world.
North America
Viking traders discover Canada and probably work their way down as far as the North East of the modern USA
Central America
Height of Mayan power in areas around Yucatan in modern Mexico.
Far East
The Hindu Champa Kingdom holds sway over much of what is now Central and Southern Viet Nam. By 1100 the Khmer kingdom centred on the capital of Angkor reaches the height of its power. The Pagan Empire rises in Burma during the 11th century and begins a series of border wars with the Khmers
