The enclosures saw the final parcelling up of land that had formed part of the great manor of Somersham since before the Norman Invasion. Cleared of forests by the 16th century and now finally devoid of deer, the enclosure survey carved up the land for grazing and arable farming. The Somersham Heath was split between the various parishes that had once been part of the manor. In the process the agricultural small holders lost their ancient grazing rights and an ancient way of living started to move into decline. Note the appalling punctuation can at times make the document hard to follow. The most interesting information about the Town of Somersham and its inhabitants is towards the end of the Survey in the section on roads.
