Town Rules
1815

In the days before Town and Parish Councils, the by laws of the town were set by the Church. The rules cover everything from policing to immigration and farming. Clearly villagers were in the habit of being careless with their livestock.

The Manor of Somersham with the Soak in the County of Huntingdon

Orders made by the parishioners of Somersham and presented to the Court Seat General Court Baron and Customary Court of John Anstey Esq. Lord of the said Manor held the 2 day of October 1815 at the George Inn Somersham.

1. We order that no person shall take any stranger or inmate into any house of this town for above the space of two nights except in the Hay time or harvest until they have first given security to the parish under the penalty of Ten Shillings for every offence to be paid to the Fen and Fieldreeves for the use of the Lord of the Manor.

2. We order that no dead Carcases or Dung hills be laid upon any of the roads under the penalty of Ten shillings and if not taken off after fourteen days notice the Fen and Fieldreeves will have liberty to take them away.

3. WE order that the Fen and Fieldreeves do well and sufficiently repair the pound when necessary out of the money to arise from the rent of the Droves.

4. We order that all persons having land in what was formerly the Field or meadow or having pasture grounds and all other persons whatever shall pay four pence for every poundage.

5. We order that no person turn any stock upon any of the Droves or Roads upon any pretence of right of Common whatever under the penalty of Ten Shillings to be paid aforesaid.

6. We order that the Constables go four times round the parish in the year to examine the Weights and Measures

7. We order that no person let their Hogs or pigs be found in or about the Town roads Droves or Banks all stock to be four pence poundage
