James Hammond
Somersham's Poet

£5.00

40 pages A5 format Saddlestitch

The life works of Somersham's own elegaic poet, a complete collection by James Hammond published for the first time in a century and a half together with sketches of the man, his family and influences and the times in which he lived.

Throughout the eighteenth century James Hammond remained a popular poet, with the public if not always with the critics. His main collection of works ran to 7 editions and Samuel Johnson included him in his own volumes on the English Poets. Today his work is completely unknown and, until now, unpublished.

It may not be the finest literary work, but it was a product of its times and as such it is as essential to understanding the history of poetry as the works that we still remember by Pope, Thompson Wordsworth and their like.
