Taxation of Edward III
The list below is of the villagers of Somersham who were taxed for a "20th" by Edward III. As his reign wore on and the demands of financing the 100 years war grew heavier, these taxes would become more frequent. The list that follows is a good indication of the size and wealth of the village before the Black Death which arrived in 1348. Compare the 70 villagers listed to pay tax with the 32 listed in total at the time of the Domesday Survey. It is also interesting to note that some names cross refer to those found in the Eyre Rolls documents (see our Mediaeval section).
