Tough times for Howard
1643-60

The Early of Suffolk was left to look after Somersham Chace and Park even when Cromwell let his relatives buy the palace to pay off a war debt. Even so he was given a rough ride by the locals and does not seem to have been given the warmest reception by the King on his restoration.

That no Waste be committed in Somsham, and other Places in Soken, whereof the Earl of Suffolk hath a Patent to keep to His Majesty's Use; and that the said Earl shall have the Possession thereof as formerly, until the Pleasure of the King be farther known.
