Changing Hands
1601

Elizabeth finally got her hands on Somersham Palace at the end of her reign. The new Bishop of Ely, Bishop Martin Heaton, was persuaded to give up the Palace in return for being allowed to take up his seat as bishop and an annuity of £1145. Below is the deed conveying the Palace and its lands to the crown. Note the windmill and the tradition of "waiesilver" paid for controlling livestock movements towards Lincolnshire.
