Somersham in the Early Middle Ages
1154-1250

The term Middle Ages is much abused and so we will be precise about how we have used it in the context of the history of Somersham. We have interpreted it as a link between the era of the Vikings and the arrival of the Tudors. For ease of reference as this is in many ways the apogee of the town of Somersham, we have split the topic into three parts, Early, Middle and Later.

From the time of Henry II, the Bishop of Ely built his Somersham residence into a substantial palace. The lands around his manor provided produce for his table, and as to the hunting, it was amongst the best in England.
