Somersham in the Middle Middle Ages!
1250-1350

The term Middle Ages is much abused and so we will be precise about how we have used it in the context of the history of Somersham. We have taken it as a link between the era of the Vikings to the arrival of the Tudors. For ease of reference as this is in many ways the apogee of the town of Somersham, we have split the topic into three parts.

This was the period which in political terms, represented the height of Somersham's fortunes. The Palace was visited by Kings and was occupied by several Lord Chancellors of England. We know that within the palace grounds there was a successful stud, bakery and brewery. Traces of a pottery kiln have been found in Colne and we know that there were other potters active in the woods towards Pidley. During this period the forests around the village were gradually cut back, destroying in the process a way of life for many living on the edge of the manor, carters, ferrymen, charcoal burners and the like.
