Towards the Modern Age
1810-1925

From the Victorian Age, new roads and the birth of Railways have all contributed to the changing landscape and possibilities within rural England.

With affordable transport, enclosures of farmland and increasing jobs in urban centres, it might be expected that Somersham would decline. Yet if the village is no long the meeting place of Kings and their councils, it has nonetheless continued to grow. The provisions of the Poor Laws may have helped to keep populations intact, but in this part of the world there were prospects of employment even in rural communities.
