The Tudor Supremacy
1485-1603

The Tudor era takes us from the battle of Bosworth to the creation of something recognisable as a nation state. Here we have Henry VIII, the dissolution of the monasteries, the loss of Calais and the triumph over the Armada. Many of these events touched directly upon Somersham.

Life in the village continued to revolve around the palace which was rebuilt at least twice during the period. The bishops managed to keep their hands on the manor during the dissolution but finally it passed, through a combination of menaces and extortion, to the Queen of England. Although Elizabeth was keen to get her hands on Somersham, it is unlikely that she ever visited.
