The Electronic Village

This website is the result of over 5 years concentrated work in bringing together a history of an English Village told through the written historical record. The village we have used, Somersham in Huntingdonshire is not filled with old buildings, Tudor cottages or ancient brick Jacobean mansions, it does however have a rich vein of recorded history running through its collective memory. This large collection of documentary material is presented here so that it can be studied in context and give more meaning to the source material.

We hope you find this site useful but welcome any comments and potential new sources for documents relevant to the site. Please feel free to use the contact boxes to get in touch. This project has been a major effort and it would not have been possible without a number of people, but in particular the contribution of David Oliver and we would like to take this opportunity to thank him for his input.

The documents presented here are all original source material housed in various repositories across England, from county record offices to the PRO to the British Library. What we have prepared is as far as is possible, a complete collection of known historical records relating to the village. This enables the local historian, the inquisitive and the student of national history all to get something out of the site. Read on one level you can trace the linear development of the village over time. However you can also use this site to see how the major events of English history, the wars of Edward III, the Reformation, the Enclosures, events with their origins far away at the centres of the political process; all in turn have impacted upon the community.
